Why evangelical ....?

Why evangelical ? ........ now that's a good question ........ indeed a very good question.......

Why not Methodist or Baptist or Church of England ...... why are we called an Evangelical Church ? What does "evangelical" mean anyway ?...... why does it matter ?

Well firstly the word evangelical means that we believe the Bible is God's word and that it brings us the 'good news' (or 'Gospel') about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The 'good news' is that when Jesus Christ died on the cross,  nearly 2000 years ago, his death dealt with the root problem of our broken relationship with God.

We are known as an evangelical church because before everything else we believe that telling other people about Jesus Christ and what He has done is of vital importance.

You see whilst no-one wants to talk about Hell, the Bible makes it quite clear that unless each of us living in Mirfield today and elsewhere in this world has made their peace with God whilst alive on Earth they will perish and as hard as that sounds that basically means they will go to Hell. Forever.

The Bible equally makes it clear that no-one need go to Hell. There is a way out . There is a way to be reconciled or made right with God. Not many ways....quite simply ... one way. But what a way....

And that's what we want to tell you about.

We want to tell you about how God's only Son, Jesus Christ, has made it possible for people like you to escape the condemnation that you know you deserve.

Be honest with yourself as you read these words. You know that one day you will die. And right now you have some vague belief that because God is good and forgiving and because you believe you are not as bad as many other people God will forgive you. Or at least that's your hope !

But that is not what God says.

God says that unless you repent now .... whilst you are alive on the earth .... when you die you will perish.

No ifs...no buts. No special cases. No second chance.

But God in his Love has sent his one and only Son into this world of ours so that "whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

Evangelical means telling you like it is !
